SYNOPSIS:
THE GLASS MENAGERIE is a semi-autobiographical account of the author’s early days in 1930’s St. Louis which mirrors the turmoil of Tennessee Williams’s own life. This powerful drama centers on the Wingfield family. It tells the tale of a son who longs to escape from his stifling home where his disillusioned mother worries about the prospects of his ‘crippled’ and painfully shy sister. ETC guest artist, Cameron Dunbar, will direct THE GLASS MENAGERIE.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
TOM WINGFIELD (late 20’s) – Tom is the narrator of this ‘memory play.’ He is a faceless worker in a warehouse. He has a poet’s nature and the desire to sail to exotic locations. Unfortunately he finds himself stuck caring for his family, tending to his sister and surviving his mother’s dominance. His Irish sense of humor helps him cope with daily frictions, but he’s most capable of allowing his pent up dreams to explode.
LAURA WINGFIELD (late 20’s) – Laura is Tom’s older sister. Laura suffered from a childhood illness, which left her with one leg slightly longer than the other. Her acute awareness of this ‘difference’ has caused her to retreat further and further into into her own world symbolized by her collection of glass figurines.
JIM O’CONNOR (late 20’s) – Jim is a nice, almost extraordinary, young man on the surface. A hero on all levels in high school, his adult life has proved a dismal failure. He has a quality of charm, and is a peculiar mix of sensitivity and selfishness. He holds a young lady’s heart and any hope for a life in his hands.
**The role of AMANDA WINGFIELD has been cast.
